Solar power is the generation of electricity from sunlight. This can be direct as with photovoltaics, or indirect as with concentrating solar power, where the sun's energy is focused to boil water which is then used to provide power. Solar power had the potential to provide over 1,000 times total world energy consumption in 2008, though it provided 0.02% of the total that year. The Benefits of Solar Power

Solar power is one of our most powerful and abundant sources of alternative energy. In fact, if it were possible to properly harness the power of the sun, the amount of sunlight that hits the Earth in one hour would be enough to power the entire planet for a whole year.

Because of this, great strides are being taken to improve the efficiency and functionality of our nation's solar power systems. With wind, water, geothermal and solar power systems becoming more and more commonplace, the United States will eventually be able to reduce or eliminate its dependence on foreign oil, increase the quality and efficiency of its electrical grids and reduce the levels of pollutants it currently emits into the atmosphere.

The Economic Impact of Solar Power

While solar power conversion systems can be expensive to install (anywhere from $10,000 to $80,000 depending on the kwh), the benefits far outweigh the cost. Plus, any solar power systems installed after January 1, 2006 are eligible for a tax credit of 30 percent of the system's cost or $2,000 max. Some benefits include:

  • If your solar power system generates more electricity than you use, the overage can be sold back to the electric company at their current rate.
  • By installing a solar power system for heating water, you can save up to 85 percent on your utility bill.
  • If the U.S. converted to solar power, it could save fifty-five million barrels of oil per year at a savings of over one billion dollars.
  • Certain states have reward programs in place that pay residents and companies who install solar power systems in their homes or businesses, thus offsetting the cost of installation. Some states include New Jersey, California and Florida and rewards can range from $20,000 for homeowners to $100,000 for businesses.
  • By concentrating on solar power, the U.S. economy would see an upturn as jobs in this field would have to be kept stateside.
