Drum Storage

Drum storage and management is a very important aspect of drum handling especially with containers that are made of steel as they are subject to corrosion and leakage. When toxic chemicals, petrol and other flammable products are stored in drums, due care must be taken to make sure that mishaps do not occur. Empty drums and damaged drums that can't be reused need to be disposed of as scrap, after correctly identifying them.

Drums are used for storing items in places such as factories, warehouses, laboratories, medical facilities and on construction sites, etc. Drums can be made of various materials such as dense cardboard, plastic and steel. Thermoplastics such as polycarbonates, nylon, polyvinyl and polystyrene are usually for caustic and acid materials. However flammable substances are generally transported in metal containers. Drums have to be stored properly to avoid any spills, contamination and pollution. If accidents do happen, proper measures for fire fighting, spill contamination, etc. need to be readily available.

Devices that are used to store small quantities of drums include items such as: multiple racks, multiple drum workstations, modular spill platforms, enclosed cabinets, shelves, drum storage pallets, outdoor drum storage units with locks and enclosures, etc. Suitable ramps and rollers must be provided to move the drums to the drum storage units. The units used to store drums can be made of plastic, wood or steel shelves. Easy access to place and lift drums should be provided. Suitable draining facilities need to be provided to clean up any spills.

There are various procedures that you should follow when storing drums. All drums must have a label on them to identify the material that is being stored in them. If a drum does contain a hazardous material the nature of the hazard must be displayed. Drums should be stored indoors and protected from the elements as they can rust outdoors and the contents could become contaminated. Plastic drums can become brittle and cracked when they are faced with extreme temperatures. You also have to inspect the drums on a regular basis to make sure they aren't damaged. Employees should be properly trained when storing and handling drums to avoiding spillages, damages and leaks. Many accidents happen when unqualified people try to transport drums from place to place.
